FOOL FOR LOVE is here

November 20, 2012 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Fool for Love

Today’s the day. I get excited every time I release a new title, but this one is a little bit special because it’s the first one in a series, which means I don’t have to say goodbye to the characters just yet. And I do love all four of them dearly by now.

Fool for Love is now available as a free download from Amazon. The promotion will run until Saturday 24 November 2012, so be sure to grab your free copy before then.

The blurb for Fool for Love (High Rise Novella One)
Betrayed by her long-term girlfriend, Alex moves into The Ivy to share a flat with her friend Nat. When she meets their neighbour Maddie, a jaded expat who’s had about enough of Hong Kong’s demanding life style, both Maddie and Alex are forced to reassess their warped view on love.

Fool for Love is the first novella in the High Rise series.

One day to FOOL FOR LOVE

November 19, 2012 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Fool for LoveIn today’s Fool for Love‘s blog post, I’ll tell you a bit more about its main characters Alex and Maddie. Before I started on the first draft I literally had weeks to put together character sheets as I was in Europe for a month-long family visit (and as we all know: newborn baby nephew=zero writing).

Instead of writing, I thought about writing (which is usually not my way of doing things). I anticipated all the writing I would do once I got back to Hong Kong without the cutest baby boy distracting me. So, I dug up a fancy Moleskine notebook someone gave me for my birthday (I have a whole stack because ever since coming out as a writer they seem to be the only presents I get) and started composing biographies for my four main characters.

Let’s start with (a brief summary of) Alex.

– Full name: Alessandra Pozzato
– Birthday: 9 October 1981
– Country of birth: Hong Kong
– Nickname: Alex (or Pizza, as Nat likes to call me)
– Profession: Group fitness instructor at Shape
– Hair colour: Black
– Eye colour: Brown
– Best friend: Nathalie Orange (Nat)
– Favourite movie: Anything with Charlize Theron (except Monster)
– Favourite song: We Found Love by Rihanna (or anything highly energetic and suitable for gym class)
– Favourite item of clothing: Tank top (white)
– Favourite food: anything organic
– Relationship status: heartbroken

And continue with Maddie

– Full name: Madison Gardens
– Birthday: 12 December 1972
– Country of birth: Australia
– Nickname: Maddie
– Profession: Investment banker at Crawford & Chase
– Hair colour: Blond
– Eye colour: Grey-blue
– Best friend: Isabella Douglas
– Favourite movie: Basic Instinct
– Favourite song: Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones
– Favourite food: Anything that goes with a nice bottle of Veuve Cliquot
– Time in Hong Kong: Two years
– Relationship status: It’s complicated

Let’s finish with another excerpt. (And don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win a free copy!) This scene takes place right before Alex and her flatmate Nat go up to Isabella’s penthouse to sample some of her Scotch.

Usually, Alex had the place to herself on a Friday night, resulting in a YouTube clip hopping frenzy of interviews with Charlize Theron—to whom Rita bore an uncanny resemblance. She could hardly pretend to have forgotten about Rita altogether, no matter how hard Nat was trying to push her into the arms of another woman. It had only been five weeks and two days.

“Why do I have to change, anyway? We’re only going two floors up and I didn’t know you were such a stickler for decorum.” Alex asked Nat, who stood adjusting the collar of her shirt in the bathroom mirror.

“It’s the penthouse, Alessandra. You can’t go to the penthouse in sweat pants. It’s not right.”

“Well, excuse me, Miss Donatella Orange, but if I’m not welcome the way I am, I might as well stay in.” Alex slanted against the door frame of the bathroom. “And don’t call me Alessandra.”

“Donatella is worse.” Nat stuck her tongue out and her reflection in the mirror looked ridiculous enough to coax a smile out of Alex. Nat turned towards Alex, an unexpected kindness in her eyes. “It’s just a drink. Nothing more. And no funny business on my part, I swear.”

“Oh, all right.” Alex was getting sick of sulking at home, anyway.

“Now put on those cheap H&M jeans. It shouldn’t be said out loud, but your ass looks absurdly good in them.” Nat took a step closer and put her hands on Alex’ shoulders. “I know you’ve been hurt. Badly. But you’re hot stuff, Pizza. And the world is a better place with your ass in those jeans in it.” She quickly pecked Alex on the cheek. “And last I heard, looking good never hurt anyone.”

“What am I supposed to say to that?” Alex fought the urge to draw Nat in for a hug.

“Absolutely nothing. Come on, hurry up. I can taste that Scotch already.” Nat combed two fingers through her bangs and straightened her posture.

“You’re so easy to get, Orange.”

“If only someone could keep me, though.”

Two days to FOOL FOR LOVE (Part two) – Sunday Snog

November 18, 2012 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Sunday Snog

Fool for Love Today’s snog is from (you guessed it right) Fool for Love. (Just sticking with this week’s theme. ;-)) Remember to leave a comment for a chance to win a free copy of Fool for Love!

Here we go for Alex and Maddie’s first kiss. Enjoy.

Alex allowed herself a silly chuckle. “You must think I’m terribly uptight.”

Maddie shook her head while digging her nails into Alex’ jeans. “The only thing I think is that you’ve been hurt. Anyway, you must think I’m quite the floozy.”

“Floozy?” Alex suppressed a fit of giggles. “Yeah, that about sums it up. A banker floozy with a seriously deranged moral compass.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” Alex adored Maddie’s self-deprecating sense of humour. “Now.” Maddie leaned a little closer and put her wine glass on the table. “This floozy would really like to kiss those uptight lips of yours.” Maddie took Alex’ glass from her hand and put it away. “No tongue, I promise.”

“That’s about the most romantic proposal I’ve ever had.”

“I thought so.” Maddie slanted her head sideways as she inched closer.

Alex smelled wine and that expensive banker perfume she remembered—often and usually when alone in bed—from the evening on Isabella’s roof top. Maddie’s lips tasted salty and promising. She brought her hand to Alex’ neck and softly dug her fingertips into her muscles while parting her lips. Slowly, she trailed her tongue over Alex’ lips. Alex immediately reciprocated by opening her mouth and allowing Maddie’s tongue to slip in.

Do stop by Victoria’s blog for more snogging!

Two days to FOOL FOR LOVE (Part one) – Six Sentence Sunday

November 18, 2012 by Harper Bliss 3 Comments

Today’s six sentences are not from Champagne as usual, but from my upcoming release Fool for Love (of course). Alex and Nat are having lunch and in these six sentences you can find out a thing or two about Nat.

“Well,” Alex stood up. “We can’t all sit around and do nothing all day. I have to get back to work.”

“I don’t feel spoken to in the least.” Without a care in the world, Nat folded one toned leg over the other and fixed her eyes on what looked to Alex like a sixteen-year-old girl who had just walked into the restaurant. “I do a lot of research for my next masterpiece in places like this.”

“Good luck, Hemingway. See you in class later.”

As always, more Six Sentence Sunday goodness can be found at the official website. I’ll be back with the next six sentences of Champagne next week. Fool for Love is out on Tuesday.

Three days to FOOL FOR LOVE

November 17, 2012 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Fool for Love I’ve decided to do a blog countdown to the release date of my next book Fool for Love, the first novella in the High Rise series. Fool for Love will be out on Tuesday 20 November 2012, so you can expect three days of promotional madness, but I’ll try to keep it interesting. 😉

There will be contests and excerpts and juicy background details, but let’s start at the beginning. A brief introduction to the High Rise series.

Four women. One building. A million complications.

High Rise is a series of four lesbian erotica romance novellas focusing on four women who live in The Ivy, the ‘sexiest building in Hong Kong’.

Alex, a local gym instructor. Her roommate Nat, a celebrated American writer who moved to Hong Kong for love. Their upstairs neighbour Maddie, a workaholic investment banker. And the penthouse inhabitant, Isabella, a psychiatrist who’s lived in the city for fifteen years.

Romances develop and untangle as these four women get to know each other better.

* * *

With every story I’ve written since Hired Help (my first), the focus has shifted more to romance than to pure erotica. Fool for Love is by far the most romantic of all. The story is longer (23.000 words), allowing me to spend more time building up the tension, which, in my opinion, makes that final release all the more satisfying. No worries though… while being more romance than erotica, there is still plenty of action between the sheets in Fool for Love.

The first novella zooms in on Alex and Maddie, two women who’ve been rather unsuccessful in their quest for love. The second novella will focus on the unlikely love story of the other two High Rise characters, Nat and Isabella. Numbers three and four will deal with… well, whatever comes next, but I don’t want to say too much about that yet.

What better way to dive in than with an excerpt… This first one is from the very beginning of the book. (Do read on until the end because I’m announcing a contest at the bottom of the page.)

“We have to stop doing this.” Maddie tucked her blouse in her skirt and leaned against the door. She should have said it before allowing June into her office again—and in her panties. “It can’t go anywhere. We both know that.”

“Yeah.” June avoided Maddie’s eyes while she zipped up her pants. They’d had this conversation before, but it wasn’t easy for Maddie to resist June, and the delicious molten copper of her skin, when they had to work side by side every day. “I know.” Maddie realised June didn’t take her seriously anymore when she said it.

“Would you consider transferring to another department?”

This caught June’s attention. She fixed her black eyes on Maddie. “Really? You want to get rid of me?”

Maddie felt guilty already. She should never have let it come to this.

“Look, babe.” She cursed herself for using the term of endearment she resorted to when approaching orgasm. And June had given her plenty of those. Usually against the closed door of Maddie’s office. Their affair didn’t have room for beds or sleep-overs. Which was exactly what was wrong with it. “I’m not the one who’s unavailable.”

“You know how I feel about you.” June inched closer. Too close. Maddie could smell her perfume. And the musky scent of sex clinging to her skin. “Boss.”

Maddie sighed and let June kiss her neck before pushing her away. “That’s hardly the issue.” She held June at arm’s length. “When I go home tonight, it’s to an empty apartment. And when I wake up tomorrow morning, it’ll be in an empty bed. I can’t do it anymore.”

“So I should just up and move? I don’t think so.” June shook herself free from Maddie’s hold and took a step back. “I’m not ruining my career over this.”

This irked Maddie, but she restrained herself. “I’ll make sure your new position is better than the one you have now.” She took a deep breath. “How does Team Manager of Operations sound?”

June shot her a disdainful look. “If you don’t want to fuck me anymore, you’re just going to have to work on your willpower.” She pouted her lips and narrowed her eyes. “I didn’t do this to get a promotion.”

“I know.” Maddie threw her hands up in despair. “But you must understand my point of view.”

“I do.” June’s face softened. “And I’m sorry, but I can’t just run off with you. We’ve discussed this and I was always very upfront about it.” A sharp pang of jealousy coursed through Maddie’s bones as June checked her watch. Hubby must be waiting. Maddie didn’t understand how June could lie to herself, and everyone around her, like that. She was born in Australia, for heaven’s sake. She didn’t need to be so Chinese and repressed about it.

“Fine. Go home to Mark. Snuggle up to him closely tonight.” Maddie stepped away from the door and opened it. “I hope you sleep well.”

“It doesn’t have to be like this.” June smoothed out one last wrinkle from her blouse before positioning herself in front of Maddie. “It’s not easy for me either.” June’s voice was soft and sultry. “Give me a little credit.”

Maddie wanted to pull June close again and kiss her until day break. She also wanted to run away from this mess. She’d always believed she was smarter than this. What a joke.

“Good night.” She pulled her face away from June, indicating the time for meaningless displays of affection had passed. Her eyes followed June’s tall, slender form as she walked away. Maddie wondered how long she’d be able to resist this time.

* * *

I hope you enjoyed that. 😉 If you did, leave a comment and win a FREE copy (e-book only – any format) of Fool for Love. I’ll be giving away one free copy every day until Tuesday.
