Snippet from ‘Lovely Rita’

August 14, 2014 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Can't Get Enough

As promised last week, here’s a teaser from my story ‘Lovely Rita’ which appears in Tenille Brown’s Can’t Get Enough. The looks of the Rita from the title are based on those of a real life famous-person Rita (but not Rita Mae Brown ;-p), but really, you’d need to read the story to (possibly) guess who. 😉

As a reminder, here’s the blurb for Can’t Get Enough:

Picking up where Gotta Have It left off, Can’t Get Enough captures the passion and intensity of quickies and nooners: those delicious times when the urge to merge takes over. Veteran erotica author and first-time editor Tenille Brown has collected stories for Can’t Get Enough that highlight the essence of insatiable desire. With contributions from familiar names like Rachel Kramer Bussel, Jacqueline Applebee and Giselle Renarde, along with newer faces like Monica Corwin and Beatrix Ellroy, this is a book full of diverse and dynamic characters who are bold and daring. The authors here knock the theme of Can’t Get Enough right out of the park with stories that will leave readers as breathless as the characters they’re reading about, dying for more.

And here’s my teaser snippet:

Sweat trickled down my temples as I danced for the first time in months. I didn’t care if Rita showed up. I boogied myself into a state of indifference I’d been craving for weeks. Pushing my arms above my head, I relished the predatory looks my exposed belly button received. Being declared too monogamous for Rita’s standards didn’t spoil me for this crowd. Just because I wasn’t one for sharing loved ones, didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy the thrill of a one-night stand.

A girl dressed in black leather pants and not much else swayed closer to me. I’d been working on my abs tirelessly since Rita left me, and now they were working for me. She pressed her hips into my behind and left them there, finding the rhythm with me. I guess you could call it dancing.

“Want a beer?” she yelled into my ear over the thundering bass.

I spun around to get a good look at her face. Hair tied back in a loose ponytail, some curls springing free. Intense black eyes and no makeup on her face. Zero resemblance to Rita.

“Yes, please.” I shot her a smile. I was out of practice and fairly certain the sexy grin I was aiming for looked more like an insecure smirk, but she nodded and headed for the bar. I exhaled and brushed a strand of hair away from my forehead.

That’s when I saw her.

Important note: It should be quite clear from the pair of men’s legs on the cover, but Can’t Get Enough is NOT a lesbian erotica anthology (although quite a few stories explore the delights of lady loving, including mine, of course.)

You can buy Can’t Get Enough from Cleis, Amazon and everywhere else you like to shop for smut.

Review: Best Lesbian Erotica 2014

February 26, 2014 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Best Lesbian Erotica 2014Here are six reasons why I enjoyed Best Lesbian Erotica 2014 (i.e. my 6 favourite stories). 😉

1. Run, Jo, Run by Cheyenne Blue
I loved this story the first time I read it in Girls Who Score and it blew me away all over again here. Cheyenne Blue is that good. Seriously, Cheyenne’s contribution packs a lifetime into a short story and ends on a very sensual and romantic note (my favourite). Additionally, the whole tale is written in the steady foot-fall rhythm of a run. It’s brilliance.

2. Tongue in Cheek by Amal Arabi
A story does not get more lesbian than this. I really had to chuckle at how the constant processing of the narrator stood in the way of her actually getting any action. Cheeky indeed.

3. Big Lesbo Cupcakery by D.L. King
Lesbians and cupcakes are made for each other and this story shows why in a very original way. I also want to try all the cupcake flavours mentioned in it.

4. Imaging by Sharon Wachsler
Honestly, when I started reading this story I groaned, Oh god, another butch/femme one. But I soon changed my mind because I found myself snickering gleefully through this tale of a woman having to undergo an MRI scan operated by a bunch of lesbians of which one is her ex (with whom it ended badly). Also, full marks for the twist at the end!

5. A Good Workout by Sinclair Sexsmith
Sinclair is such a gifted, organic writer. I’m right there with the narrator when she finishes her work-out and ends up in the steam room. Also, gym locker rooms and steam rooms are what most of my fantasies are made of.

6. Reunion at St. Mary’s by Catherine Lundoff
I’m guessing this will be most people’s favourite story… 😉 It’s completely over the top, but in a good way. It features a high school reunion, memories of spanking nuns, dressing up in habits and a full-on lesbian orgy. Things can hardly get wetter.

As with all anthologies, because of personal taste, I liked some stories more than others, but if you like your erotica truly (and I really mean truly, as opposed to straight girls getting it on for show) lesbian, I can only recommend it.

Special Guest: Alison Tyler

October 13, 2013 by Harper Bliss 2 Comments

Dark Secret Love Admittedly, I’m one of many erotica authors who tend to read non-erotica books for relaxation purposes, but, when Alison Tyler‘s Dark Secret Love was released, I more than happily made an exception. I read it as I got back from Belgium and was suffering (as I always do) from a severe case of west-to-east jet lag (the worst). Needless to say, it did not help me sleep, at all. For several nights in a row, I stayed up until four devouring this book. It’s that good. Why? There’s the biographical aspect, of course. (But more on that later from Alison herself.) When the empress of erotic literature writes a book about her sexual journey towards submission, I want to read it. (It’s only human nature.) Then there’s the simple fact that Alison can pack so much emotion in a single sentence, my mind gets blown at least three times per page.

I know most of you stumble onto my blog looking for lesbian erotica, but trust me, you don’t want to miss this one. Dark Secret Love is literary erotica of the absolute highest order that will have you on the edge of your seat and wonder (more than once): did this really happen? Now let’s hear what Alison herself has to say about her love of memoirs and writing ‘truth’.

Like Pouring Cream
By Alison Tyler

I didn’t actually know I was addicted to memoirs until I looked at my bookshelf once and thought, “Oh, my god. I’m addicted to memoirs.” Moab is My Washpot by Stephen Fry. Wrecking Crew by John Albert. Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl. The Prizewinner of Defiance Ohio by Terry Ryan. The Time Bandit by Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand. These are battered books I return to repeatedly. They help me. They whole me. I don’t really know how. I don’t really know why.

How much of what you write is true? People ask this all the time. Sommer Marsden recently tackled the question in a post on this topic. The fact is, I do often put truth into my fiction. But in Dark Secret Love, I have to say, I put fiction in my truth.
And you know what? Truth is hard.

On the night of our first date, as we walked through the darkness near my house, he stopped and pressed me up against the side of a parked car. “What’s your secret fantasy?” he murmured, so soft against my skin. “You can tell me, baby. You can tell me anything.”

My goal, my dream, my deepest desires have always rested in taking it. Lowering my head, gritting my teeth, and bearing the pain, the humiliation. But I couldn’t tell him that. I stared at him in the glow of the streetlight, and then looked down. Brock instantly tilted my face to his. “When I ask you a question,” he said, his voice more stern now, “I expect a response.”

A delicious chill ran through me.

I hadn’t needed to say a word.

Brock understood. He was on me in a heartbeat, and he never let up.

There were days I had to wear long-sleeved shirts to cover the evidence that I’d spent part of the weekend cuffed to his bed. There were days that I couldn’t sit right in class, that I stared up at the board, or tried to focus on the discussion, but saw nothing, heard nothing.

He made me talk eventually. I didn’t get away with coy glances, with wishful, wistful expressions. He tied me down and asked his questions, and he forced me to answer every single one.

I was on that date. Oh, seventeen million lifetimes ago. I was that girl with the man who knew. Nostalgia can hit me when I smell smoke because of him. No, I don’t want to go back. I would never go back.

But truth—finding your truth, sharing your truth—is hard.

Yes for this series, I added the fiction, like pouring that stream of pure cream into your coffee. Of course, my readers will know—I take my coffee black.

Alison Tyler has written for publishers including Cleis, Harlequin, Black Lace, Plume, Masquerade, and Go Deeper. Her most recent novel is Dark Secret Love. The second in the series, The Delicious Torment, will be released in January 2014. Visit alisontyler.blogspot.com for 24/7 caffeine and snark.

My top 10 stories in Girl Fever

July 29, 2012 by Harper Bliss Leave a Comment

Girl Fever I really enjoyed this flash fiction anthology. Because the 69 stories were so short it seemed to be never-ending (in a good way). Another advantage of having so many stories in one book is the amazing variety on display. You know how the saying goes… ‘there’s something for everyone’. Well, there are multiple somethings for everyone here.

The reason why I decided to put together a top 10 is because (I really like lists) when I started reading what would later wind up as my favourite story, I sighed with desperation at the science fiction genre and space craft setting. But the beauty of this book, apart from the array of styles and genres it assembles, is in the length of the stories. Maybe, if the space story had been more than (approximately) 1000 words, I would have moved on (time is precious and there is so much to read, you know). But because I knew that it would only take five minutes, I continued and I was so amazed by its humour and sexy plot twists.

Obviously we all have different tastes and I like some stories better than others. This top 10 is merely meant to be a list of ten good reasons why you should read this book (apart from the fact that it’s really hot).

1. Oh Captain, My Captain by Cha Cha White
This is the story I referred to earlier. I couldn’t stop grinning after reading it. Apart from being well-written, it’s hilarious, sexy and has an authority figure melting at the tongue of a subordinate (and that always does it for me.)

2. Freeway Falling by Cal Gimpelevich
I love the staccato writing in this one and the urgency it creates. The setting (in a car on the freeway) is evoked expertly and, most importantly, the sex is hot.

3. Caramel by Louise Blaydon
Short, fluid, poetic and excellent.

4. Submission Letter by Tara Young
The title says it all.

5. Heat Lightning by Sommer Marsden
My kind of story. Eloquent, romantic and hot.

6. I Wish I Knew You by Cheyenne Blue
A woman married to a republican watches her lesbian neighbours go at it from the breakfast table. Very dramatic.

7. Ignition switch by Delilah Devlin
That’s what friends are for.

8. Breathless by Ariel Graham
Two women bump into each other while running. Sexy stuff ensues. Hot and, in some way, very recognisable.

9. Lure by Nikki Magennis
I adore the writing in this one. Why? Here’s an example that makes me swoon. “We hid indoors for two days, pecking inquisitively, opening each other up and looking inside.”

10. Love Las Muertas by Kirsty Logan
Erotic romance excellence in 1000 words

Honourable mention to Season Finale by Lea Meadows because any story (kind of) featuring Detective Olivia Benson is obviously brilliant.
