Hop Against Homophobia and Transphobia: ‘Show, don’t tell.’

May 17, 2014 by Harper Bliss 10 Comments

Hop Against Homophobia and Transphobia Today is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia and as much as I’ve made myself believe over the years that I’ve always been lucky enough to never have been on the receiving end of homophobia, that is exactly how much I’ve fooled myself. Because, quite simply, every single person not identifying as straight has been on the receiving end of it.

And yes, we all know I have a dramatic personality, and I don’t want to trivialise or diminish the effects of gay-bashing and the pure hatred displayed in Russia and too many other countries, but this blog post is not about comparing, it’s about showing how utterly engrained homophobia is in our every day life.

I’m not just talking about that time when I entered my own bedroom at the tender age of seventeen, not long after having come out to my family, and found a piece of paper with the word ‘DYKE’ scribbled on it on my desk (courtesy of my sister’s boyfriend, a certified asshole who—thankfully—disappeared from her life not long after.)

I’m referring to every time someone asks my wife and I if we are sisters (if, like us, you live in Asia, this happens a lot.) (Funny, related story: A local friend introduced us to his mother once and she immediately asked if we were married. We confirmed enthusiastically, a little perplexed by her forward way of thinking, upon which she asked the following question: “Then where are your husbands?”) Not homophobia, just ignorance, I hear you say. But what is homophobia if not ignorance?

I’m talking about all the local people I know in Hong Kong, all grown men and women, for whom it’s simply not an option to come out of the closet. Or about a friend of my mother’s who, when my mother told her I’d come out, dryly said: “I always thought so.”

I’m talking about the small stuff, those daily life occurrences that often don’t even deter me anymore—because I’ve gotten used to them. I’ve grown a thick skin. I’ve come to expect it, really. And, most of the time, I can’t even hold it against the person saying something silly, like my straight friend who keeps asking me when I’ll write something for ‘her people’.

And I’m sure that, if I were straight, I’d be the same, because in most cases it’s not malice, just the aforementioned ignorance. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that growing up queer is growing up different—and growing up is already so hard to do.

Even in our own community, where, I’m ashamed to say, bi-phobia still reigns supreme, being different from the norm is frowned upon. Apparently, you need to be either this or that, and there’s no room for anything in-between, because, for some reason, certain grey areas are so difficult to grasp. And, in the end, isn’t that what it boils down to: understanding—or the lack thereof.

So, to say it in writerly terms (and in the immortal words of Alex Vause in Orange Is The New Black when she’s pleasuring a very loud, vocal Piper): “Show, don’t tell.”

Don’t tell your LGBTQ friend, co-worker, acquaintance or family member that ‘you don’t have a problem with them being gay’. (Even though, I’m sure, in some situations it means a lot.) So many people say it every day, but what does it really mean? Don’t tell us but, instead, show us. Show us by simply treating us exactly the same way as you would treat anyone else.

Valentine’s Day Gift Hop

February 10, 2014 by Harper Bliss 39 Comments

Valentine’s Day Gift HopI’m a big sucker for romance, seriously, the longer I write, the more romantic my books become. In the past two years, I have gone from quite unromantic sex with escorts and honeymoon threesomes to two women falling in love in the blink of an eye (and engaging in a whole lot of processing before going all the way.) It used to be so that I added a little romance to my erotica, but these days, I actually find that, in most of my stories, erotica is taking a backseat to romance.

Every new book I write is always more romantic (and, admittedly, also more dramatic ;-0) than the previous one, so it’s only logical that my most romantic book is my latest (stand-alone) release, Summer’s End. It tells the story of two broken souls who find each other on a tropical island. And, because it’s Valentine’s Week and all that (and this is a blog hop with prizes!) I’m giving away three e-book copies of Summer’s End to three commenters.

Additionally, simply by commenting, you’ll also be eligible to win a Kindle Paperwhite and the digital new adult romance basket pictured below. Please, don’t forget to include your e-mail address when commenting (so you can be contacted in case of winning!)

Hot Summer Romance Giveaway Hop

July 18, 2013 by Harper Bliss 29 Comments

Hot Summer Romance Giveaway HopIt’s the Hot Summer Romance Giveaway Hop and it’s going to be a sentimental one. Be warned. 😉 The topic is romance so it’s only logical that I dedicate this blog post to my wife (who is not very romantically inclined but will secretly love what I have to say.)

The anniversary of the very first time we met falls smack in the middle of this hop. On the 20th of July thirteen years ago, I was fresh out of college, I had terrible red-dyed hair, I was still so young and foolish even though I’d had my heart broken badly a few times already, and there she was. This cute girl with gorgeous curly hair, a shy smile and baggy jeans (those were fashionable back then.)

It took me all of five minutes to fall for her. She made me wait a few months, but somehow I knew she wasn’t going anywhere. Thirteen years down the line, we’ve moved to the other side of the world together, and if it hadn’t been for her, Harper Bliss would not exist. Because she gave me what I’d always yearned for while slogging away at my day job, the most precious gift anyone could receive: time to explore what I really wanted to do. Obviously she had no way of knowing I’d end up writing and publishing erotica, but hey, let’s just say there are worse jobs a spouse could have (although it doesn’t make for the best dinner conversation at the in-laws.)

Together we founded Ladylit and, very recently, launched A Hotter State. We always joke that’s she’s the brain behind it all and I’m the tits, but, all jokes aside, not a story leaves my mailbox until my wife has read it multiple times. But that is nothing compared to the hours she spends listening to my crazy ideas, to my dreams that often know no bounds. She’s always encouraging, always positive and still as cute as ever (although the curls and the baggy jeans have gone.)

Was that romantic enough for you? 😉 Let’s get on with the prizes then!

Here are the rules:

– There are two grand prizes: #1 is a Kindle Fire. #2 is a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate. Grand prize winners will be selected from post comments via random number generation.

– I’m giving away a copy (e-book, any format) of Endless Summer and High Rise (The Complete Collection) to two lucky commenters (picked at random). To enter leave a comment below (include your e-mail address so I can contact you if you’ve won!)

– Visit the links below to hop to as many blogs as you want (and comment often to increase your chances of winning the grand prizes.)

– The hop ends on July 21st (11:59 pm EST), so you have four days to enter the giveaway.

Happy hopping and good luck!

The Equal Rights Blog Hop

July 4, 2013 by Harper Bliss 15 Comments

The Equal Rights Blog HopSo, let’s kick my jetlagged (aka lazy) post-holiday butt into gear with a good old blog hop and giveaway! It’s quite fitting that the theme for this hop is Equal Rights as I just returned from a trip San Francisco. We arrived on the day that the Supreme Court ruled against DOMA and there was quite a party going on in te Castro.

I’ve been quite lucky in the sense that, despite being a lesbian, I never really had to fight for anything. I never considered myself any different from anyone else, because (as cheesy as it may sound), even when I first realised I liked girls as a teenager, I always did know that ‘love is love’. Of course, I didn’t grow up in Russia, Africa or the Middle East. I was born in liberal Belgium, where we’ve had the right to marry since 2003 (that’s 10 years!) and where I joined an LGBT youth group at the tender age of 16. And what a difference it made to just be able to be myself among peers.

When I was 18 I had the opportunity to attend a gay camp, where LGBT youngsters from all over the country united for a few days of being completely un-judged and totally accepted. Because, as easy as it is for me to say now, so many years later, that I never experienced any problems with the fact that I’m a lesbian, I fully realise I owe this for a large part to the LGBT community I was so lucky to become a part of at such a young age. The generation before me didn’t have that luxury–many teenagers across the globe don’t have it today. And they’re the ones who fought for the rights I have today.

But, thanks to the LGBT community and its relentless fighting spirit, the world is changing. Even in Hong Kong, where I currently live (and where my marriage to my wife is not recognised), the tide seems to be changing somewhat. Last May, after a long battle in court, a transgender woman won the right to marry her boyfriend. I have nothing but gratitude for the LGBT community and what they have achieved even in my short (well, not that short) lifetime.

So, in honour of W, Edie Windsor, and everyone who has ever marched for equal rights, let’s have a giveaway! 😉

Here are the rules:

– There’s a Grand Prize Giveaway hosted by Queer Town Abbey. You can win Amazon gift cards, free e-books and more (all info here >>) To enter you’ll need the answer to the following question: Which country was I born in?

– I’m giving away a copy (e-book, any format) of Anything She Wants, Girls Only (Volume Two) and High Rise (The Complete Collection) to three lucky commenters (picked at random). To enter leave a comment below (include your e-mail address so I can contact you if you’ve won!)

– Visit The Equal Rights Blog Hop page and hop to as many blogs as you want.

– The hop ends on July 7th (11:59 pm EST), so you have four days to enter the giveaway.

Happy hopping and good luck!

Wet and Wild Blog Hop

May 20, 2013 by Harper Bliss 38 Comments

Wet and Wild Bloghop Well, we all know I like things wet and wild (except for rainy season, I hate rainy season!) I’ve written quite a few shower scenes (download Wetter for free if you want a taste) and lately, I can’t seem to stop penning sweaty gym related tales (a mini-anthology is in the works).

My favourite one, though, is Nat and Isabella’s first sexy scene in Undisclosed Desires (High Rise Novella Two). As luck would have it (no, not planned at all ;-p), I’m giving away three copies of High Rise (The Complete Collection).

The High Rise Series takes place during the dry season in Hong Kong, but not to worry, there is plenty of wet and wild action going on. For a chance to win, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post.

Important: include your e-mail address in your comment to be eligible to win the Wet and Wild Blog Hop grand prizes (a $100 Victoria’s Secret gift card and a digital basket with some awesome e-books) as well!
